Here at G!RO we continue to share our ways of beating the global pandemic and keeping morale high! Jamie tells us how his year sampling a new style of riding on his Downrock has been a godsend in this unprecedented year!
Wow! It’s been nearly a year since that giant box, containing my new favourite bike arrived! It was March 2020, things were starting to head south globally and the UK was a few short days away from Lockdown 1.0, but spirits were high as me and head mechanic Danny tore into the box containing all the parts, and the beautiful Downrock frame Curve had just shipped us. Days were getting longer, weather was getting warmer, riding was getting easier and ignoring the global pandemic things were looking up… Except, how can you ignore a global pandemic... That’s right, you can’t!!!

With the backdrop of Covid & the global pandemic, 2020 has been a period of time like no other. Navigating from lockdown to lockdown, restrictions to restrictions, following the science or not following the science, our day to day interactions & activities as we used to know them quickly became a thing of the past. In the weeks & months that followed that initial lockdown period, it was clear that many people were trying to adjust to this new way of doing things.

The Curve Downrock honourably lives up to the press Curve give it on their website, not that I’ve seen a frill neck lizard fanging around on hot sand before, but riding this beast has given me fairly clear picture of exactly what this looks like. Look out for me on the dusty hillside of Ranmore this summer, and you’ll never need to watch a nature documentary about a frill neck lizard again.

As hopefully some of you will have seen in part 1, we’ve been doing regular Zwift meet-ups for you guys, the G!RO community. A great way to ride socially, with mates without disregarding the incredibly important lockdown measures we are still living under here in the UK. It goes without saying, this offers an incredible tool to ride responsibly and protect the NHS as they admirably negotiate this difficult time. We have been championing the need to ride responsibly since day 1 of the lockdown here in the UK, and our Zwift rides are one of the many ways we are doing this, hopefully boosting morale and helping everyone keep pedalling despite the ongoing situation.

At the heart of G!RO, and even in the very early planning stages before we opened for business, we have celebrated and championed the synergy between coffee and cycling. In order to create a local hub for local riders, of course, coffee had to be an integral part of that. It seems so synonymous now that cycling and coffee are all part of the same experience. And beyond cycling, coffee has found its way into the very core of our everyday. This luxurious, exotic, rich dark liquid that is the centre point for meetings, catch-ups, dates, working from home, and more to the point - the start and end of a cycle ride. G!RO has based its very being around a cup of coffee.

Last week saw the Guildford Crit, a 0.6km town centre crit that uses the infamous cobbled high street of Guildford as a large part of the circuit and the toughest finishing straight in Surrey. Every year Charlotteville CC put on this awesome race, featuring all different level racing, all raced at full gas. The nature of the circuit leaves you nowhere to hide, technical, tough, fast and short, this course will beat you up and spit you out whether you’re off the front leading comfortably or at the back struggling to keep up. There’s no easy race at Guildford. Whilst the short, technical course is brutal it also offers a spectacle that allows spectators to get immersed in the action and always turns out a big crowd, with the G!RO support crew definitely being the loudest!
